How can I prevent my stethoscope from cracking?

The majority of tubing used on Littmann stethoscopes is made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride), which becomes hard over a long period of time when exposed to lipids found in human skin. If worn around the neck, it is recommended to wear the stethoscope over a collar away from contact with your skin.
